The recording studio “Syo’ mati’ mya’” (“The House of Singing Voices”) continues to grow in Nadym (Yamal-Nenets autonomous okrug).

The idea of the recording studio was proposed by Ilya Serotetto. He is a young resident of Nadym, a native speaker of the Nenets language, an author of Nenets poems and pieces of music.

In December, 2021, Ilya participated in the working platform “Linguistic and cultural heritage” of the All-Russian Youth Forum of Indigenous small-numbered peoples of the North, Siberia and the Far East of the Russian Federation “Russian North” and won a grant of 280 thousand rubles from Rosmolodezh in the youth initiative competition.

Then Ilya won another grant of 100 thousand rubles as a result of the “Yamal youth initiatives” competition.

Today, a studio for recording authentic Nenets songs is in demand. Ten compositions have already been recorded. Eight of them are old and authentic. Two songs are in a modern arrangement.

Ilya’s associates also help him with the project. They are from different towns and villages of Yamal. The team meets native speakers, records them telling folklore stories and transfers these recordings to the author of the project for further studio processing.

By the end of 2022, the recording studio will have processed thirty works including fifteen old Nenets compositions and another fifteen Nenets songs in a modern arrangement.

“The House of Singing Voices” aims to preserve speech and culture of the indigenous peoples of the North, in particular, the Nenets. Its idea is to collect audio recordings of ethnic and authentic songs and give them a new sound with the help of a modern arrangement, still maintaining their identity,” – says Ilya Serotetto, the author of the project.
