gallery | The VII Forum “Language Policy in the Russian Federation

On December 7-8, 2023, the VII Forum "Language Policy in the Russian Federation" was held in Moscow, timed to coincide with the Year of the Russian Language as the Language of Interethnic Communication in the Commonwealth of Independent States in 2023 (hereinafter – the forum).

The forum was aimed at a comprehensive discussion of topical practical issues of state policy in the field of preserving the linguistic diversity of the Russian Federation, new technological solutions for the support and development of languages. Russian Russian was given special attention to the discussion of the role of the Russian language in interethnic communication and the development of multilateral cultural and humanitarian cooperation related to the promotion of the Russian language abroad.

The Forum was attended (online and offline) by representatives of federal and regional authorities, leading scientific educational institutions, language activists and experts in the field of preservation and development of the languages of the peoples of the Russian Federation from 68 subjects of the Russian Federation, as well as representatives of Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, India and Iran.

The forum program included a plenary session "The Russian language in the CIS: uniting peoples, preserving traditions", as well as 3 panel sessions: "The Russian language is a national treasure: how it nourishes and enriches the languages of the peoples of Russia"; "Preserving the languages of the peoples of Russia: state, society, business"; "Mechanisms for the support and development of the languages of the peoples of the Russian Federation in the digital space".

In 2022-2032, the Russian Federation will host the International Decade of Indigenous Languages.

During the meeting, the interim results of the implementation of the action plan for the Decade in the Russian Federation were summarized, and the initiative to supplement the federal plan of the Decade with new activities was discussed.

In addition, within the framework of the forum, the laureates of the VII contest of the All-Russian Public Prize for the Preservation of Linguistic Diversity "Key Word", organized by the Federal Academy of Sciences of Russia jointly with the House of Peoples of Russia, were awarded.

The All–Russian Public Award for the Preservation of the Linguistic Diversity of the Russian Federation "Key Word" is an all-Russian competition for the best projects aimed at preserving the linguistic diversity of the Russian Federation, encouraging work to create conditions and opportunities that increase interest in the preservation and development of the languages of the peoples of the Russian Federation.

In total, 252 applications from 57 subjects of the Russian Federation, including from new regions of the country, were received for the competition in 2023.
