The Nivkh are the oldest indigenous people of Sakhalin.
In the course of a long historical development, the Nivkhs created their own fine art, preserving their original views on nature. They became the creators of various genres of oral folk art, colorful ornamental art. In the first place in the Nivkh folklore is nature - trees, rivers, birds, animals that have human traits, feelings, actions, customs.
The folklore hero of the Nivkhs is nameless, he fights evil spirits, stands up for the offended as a champion of goodness and justice.
