In 2023, scientists of the linguistics sector of the Institute of Linguistics, Literature and History of Karelian Research Centre held an Interregional marathon of recordings of Veps and Karelian speech “Listening to the native dialect”

The Marathon was dedicated to the memory of famous Russian scientists of Finno-Ugric studies M.M. Khamalyainen and G.N. Makarov.
The main goal of the Marathon is to promote the increase and development of public interest in the preservation and study of the language and culture of the Baltic-Finnish peoples of the North-West of the Russian Federation.
23 Marathon participants from the Republic of Karelia, Tver and Leningrad regions sent 30 unique recordings of Karelian and Vepsian speech recorded from native speakers. The recordings will be added to the collection of the Speech Corpus of the Baltic-Finnish languages of Karelia, created on the platform of the “Open Corpus of the Vepsian and Karelian Languages” (VepKar).
