The Marathon was dedicated to the memory of famous Russian scientists of Finno-Ugric studies M.M. Khamalyainen and G.N. Makarov.
The main goal of the Marathon is to promote the increase and development of public interest in the preservation and study of the language and culture of the Baltic-Finnish peoples of the North-West of the Russian Federation.
23 Marathon participants from the Republic of Karelia, Tver and Leningrad regions sent 30 unique recordings of Karelian and Vepsian speech recorded from native speakers. The recordings will be added to the collection of the Speech Corpus of the Baltic-Finnish languages of Karelia, created on the platform of the “Open Corpus of the Vepsian and Karelian Languages” (VepKar).

This collaborative platform was established to enable the community of the International Decade of Indigenous Languages (IDIL 2022–2032) to share events, activities, and resources. The content published on the platform is the responsibility of registered users and does not commit the Secretariat of the Decade (UNESCO) and/or the Members of the Global Task Force for Making a Decade of Action for Indigenous Languages.
