2022 Mother Tongue Film Festival: I Ka Wā Ma Mua, I Ka Wā Ma Hope – Through the Past is the Future

The ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi proverb i ka wā ma mua, i ka wā ma hope (through the past is the future) evokes an awareness that our ancestors provide us with a foundation for the futures we create. Our understandings of the past are as dynamic as our own living cultures.

With the 2022 Mother Tongue Film Festival, we reflect on the legacies of our ancestors, whether they are manifested in the words we speak, songs we sing, land and sea we continue to use, documents we read, or the audiovisual recordings we watch. While acknowledging the burdens of the past, we focus on its gifts and its lessons to help us to build more equitable futures.

Since 2016, the festival has celebrated International Mother Language Day on February 21. This year, join us for the seventh annual festival online, with on-demand film screenings and virtual events from February 17 to March 4, 2022.

El dicho ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi que dice, i ka wā ma mua, i ka wā ma hope (el futuro se fortalece en el pasado), evoca los saberes de nuestros ancestros, que nos ofrecen las fundaciones de los futuros que queremos crear. El conocimiento de nuestros pasados es tan vivo como lo son nuestras culturas.

El Festival de Cine de la Lengua Materna del 2022 nos invita a pensar en el legado de nuestros ancestros, que se expresa a través de nuestras palabras, nuestros cantos, nuestras tierras y nuestros mares que seguimos recorriendo, los documentos que leemos, o las grabaciones audiovisuales que miramos. Mientras reconocemos el peso del pasado, nos concentramos en lo que nos regala y enseña para ayudarnos a crear futuros más justos.

Desde el 2016, el festival ha celebrado el Día Internacional de la Lengua Materna el 21 de febrero. Este año, les invitamos a unirse virtualmente con nosotros para la séptima edición del festival, para ver películas bajo demanda y participar de nuestros eventos virtuales desde el 17 de febrero hasta el 4 marzo del 2022.
