Community event - Votic puppet show

Languages: Russian, Veps

Students in Slantsy were introduced to the culture of the indigenous peoples of Leningrad Region and watched a Votic puppet show.
Ahead of the International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples, the House of Friendship of Leningrad Region, together with activists and volunteers from the Autonomous Non-Profit Organization “Center of Indigenous Peoples of Leningrad Region,” held an interactive educational program for the children at the “Orlyonok” City Health Camp, based at Slantsy Secondary School No. 3.
The elementary school students learned about the indigenous peoples living in Leningrad Region: the Vepsians, Izhorians, and Votes. Elena Vedaiko, the head and teacher of the Kantele Music School at the “Center of Indigenous Peoples,” conducted a master class on playing the kantele, a traditional musical instrument of the Finno-Ugric peoples. For the young audience, actors from the “Kagrakaru” Puppet Theater performed a Votic fairy tale, “Yurchi and the Little Snake,” narrated in both Votic and Russian.
