The “Belém Letter” concerning the languages of Brazil’s Indigenous Peoples (2nd International Symposium “Viva Língua Viva”)

The world’s Indigenous peoples, their leaders, governments, and both governmental and non-governmental organizations have been convened by UNESCO to come together for the
International Decade of Indigenous Languages (2022-2032) for the purpose of maintaining, strengthening, vitalizing, revitalizing, and reclaiming Indigenous languages, as an alternative means to break the global imbalance that directly impacts the life of the living creatures of our planet.

We demand that the Ministry of Original/First Peoples undertake action, based on current law, to support and guarantee the promotion of Indigenous languages. This demand is being put forth by the National Working Group for the International Decade of Indigenous Languages; by
thirty-four Indigenous peoples; by leaders, elders, specialists, linguists, supporting institutions, partners, Indigenous organizations, and governmental and non-governmental entities who have come together for the 2nd International Symposium “Viva Língua Viva,” which was organized by
the Federal University of Pará, the Museu Paraense Emílio Goeldi and the Brazilian Linguistics Association and which took place in the city of Belém (Pará state) between November 22nd and November 25th 2022.

CARTA DE BELÉM DAS LÍNGUAS DOS POVOS INDÍGENAS DO BRASIL (2o SEMINÁRIO INTERNACIONAL – VIVA LÍNGUA VIVA)

Os povos indígenas, os líderes, os governantes e organizações Governamentais e não-governamentais do mundo estão sendo convocados pela UNESCO para se unirem na Década Internacional das Línguas Indígenas (2022-2032) em prol da manutenção, do fortalecimento, da vitalização, da revitalização, da retomada das línguas indígenas, como alternativa para frear o desequilíbrio global que impacta diretamente a vida dos seres vivos do planeta.

O Grupo de Trabalho Nacional para a Década Internacional das Línguas Indígenas, 33 povos indígenas, lideranças, anciãos, especialistas, linguistas, além de instituições apoiadoras, parceiros, organizações indígenas, entidades governamentais e não governamentais reunidos no 2o Seminário Internacional Viva Língua Viva, organizado pela Universidade Federal do Pará, Museu Paraense Emílio Goeldi e associação Brasileira de Linguística, realizado na cidade de Belém (PA) entre os dias 22 a 25 de novembro de 2022, reivindicam ações junto ao Ministério dos Povos Indígenas com base nas legislações vigentes que amparam e garantem a promoção das línguas indígenas.
