Background
The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development provides a global framework for achieving prosperity for all while protecting the planet. With the 2030 deadline approaching, urgent action is needed to achieve its 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The Pact for the Future, adopted at the 2024 Summit of the Future, underscores the interconnected nature of global challenges, including education equity, climate resilience, migration, technological divides, and social inclusion – all of which are closely linked to language.
Objectives
- Advocate for the integration of languages in educational systems, policies, and public discourse—highlighting their critical role in inclusive learning, cultural identity, and innovation.
- Foster collaboration to promote multilingualism, safeguard cultural heritage, and address challenges related to learning outcomes and language loss.
- Advance discussions on accelerating progress towards the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the International Decade of Indigenous Languages (2022-2032).
Target Audience
The event is open to stakeholders working on language issues and/or sustainable development, including:
- Government officials and policymakers in education, culture, and social development
- Representatives from UN agencies, international organizations, Embassies
- Educators, linguists, and researchers
- Civil society organizations focused on language and cultural preservation
- Representatives of indigenous and ethnolinguistic communities
