On May 24, on the Day of Slavic Literacy and Culture in the Lomonosov District of Leningrad region, an educational program titled “From Az to Izhitsa: I Know Letters, I Respect Cyrillic” took place for children. The House of Friendship in Leningrad Oblast, together with the Union of Russian Compatriots and the Lomonosov District House of Friendship, prepared exhibitions, workshops, and traditional games for elementary school students from School No. 3 in the village of Gorbunki. The children were told about the history of the Day of Slavic Literacy and Culture and its significance for Slavic peoples. Russian folk songs, such as “In the Forge” and “Russian Kadryl,” were performed.

A master class on Glagolitic and Cyrillic script was conducted by Dmitry Rodyshevcev, the Head of the Department of Interethnic and Interconfessional Relations at the House of Friendship, for fourth-grade students. He presented a “Cera,” a wax tablet used for writing. The wax surface was inscribed with marks using a sharp metal, wooden, or bone stylus. Similar writing implements were used in Ancient Rome, and numerous wax tablets have been discovered by archaeologists in Novgorod, Russia.

The students became acquainted with the first Slavic alphabets: Glagolitic and Cyrillic, and each student drew a chosen letter. It is known that when creating the script, Cyril and Methodius decided that the letters in their alphabet would be beautiful. The entire Cyrillic script consists of kind letters and kind words, as they were created by Cyril and Methodius with kindness, light, and faith
