In this conference, is highlighted, the theme of “damnatio memoriae” and the cancel culture dealing with what is happening in Naples, (and about the Neapolitan language) which can currently be considered as an enormous “laboratory” of manipulation.

In this sense, following Noam Chomsky, we consider the cancel culture as the continuation – with the means offered by modernity – of the methodologies with which media institutions traditionally shape the opinion of the masses.

In Naples, this ideology is transmitted by local elites according to neocolonial policies with a sort of ideology, the so-called “damnatio memoriae” or the cancellation of memory: a scientific manipulation of the facts, of the historical memory of a community, for political and ideological reasons.

Today, the combination of “damnatio memoriae” and the so-called cancel culture affects the Neapolitan identity, first of all its language, for example through the mass media and certain literature (folklorism, paternalism, criminalization) with deformation and degradation of the authentic Neapolitan cosmogony that remains, on the contrary, deeply humanistic and supportive.

This manipulation also happens with the imposition of artifacts and works of art completely unrelated to the Neapolitan identity.

On the contrary, our work of “resistance” as Accademia Napoletana for the promotion of the authentic Neapolitan language and culture, in Italy and abroad.
