A round table on terminology, spelling and toponymy in the languages of the indigenous peoples of the Republic of Karelia was held in Petrozavodsk. The event is dedicated to the 25th anniversary of the Republican Term and Spelling Commission under the Head of the Republic of Karelia

The Commission was established in May 1998 by the Decree of the Chairman of the Government of the Republic of Karelia in order to accelerate the development of the Karelian and Vepsian languages.

The main tasks of the Commission are the development and ordering of the lexical stock of the Karelian and Vepsian languages, the formation of new political, economic and other thematic vocabulary in the Karelian and Vepsian languages in order to introduce it into everyday speech, the translation of various kinds of information into the languages of the indigenous peoples of Karelia. The Commission consists of representatives of the Institute of Language, Literature and History, Petrozavodsk State University, The Publishing House Periodica, GTRK Karelia.

Over the past three years, as a result of the work of the Commission, together with partners, more than 3,500 titles and information materials have been translated into Karelian and Veps languages.

The Ministry of National and Regional Policy of the Republic of Karelia is responsible for supporting the activities of the Commission.
