The International Festival of Theatre in Minority Languages

Cultural Event

Global | Barcelos | Theatro Gil Vicente

Performances/theatre

Languages: Sassarese

LÍNGUA is an international festival held every two years and aims to reflect on the artistic and identity of the amateur theatre as a means of preserving and asserting minority languages. It intends not only to be a theatre show, but also a multicultural meeting point for the discussion of the challenges and issues that amateur theatre presents in this context.

A festival dedicated to the languages of the land, where amateur theatre identity of a region or of a language or dialect has a stage. What do we lose when a language dies? This is the question that led us to this new project: the importance of amateur theatre as an expression of its resilience, because when a language dies, an entire material and immaterial legacy that was passed down from generation to generation dies.

This Festival has the seal of the Club for UNESCO for the Safeguarding of Theatre in Minority Languages.

Each edition of the Festival will present a small publication with the results of the Meeting, in which the participating Companies, their works and their impact on the local community will be presented (the publication will be published in the main languages of each edition).

This first edition will take place on 10th, 11th and 12th of June of 2022, in the city of Barcelos (Portugal) at Theatro Gil Vicente.

The Sasserese (Sardinia, Italy), the Mirandese (Miranda do Douro, Portugal) and the Extremaduran (Extremadura, Spain) languages will be the protagonists of this edition.
