link | Early literacy resources in Nama

Designed for:

1) First language Nama speakers who have not had access to early literacy materials in their mother tongue

AND

2) First language Afrikaans speakers learning Nama as a second or additional language

These resources were developed in collaboration with members of the South African Nama Development Association (SANDEVA) and the Richtersveld Nama Arts and Culture Development Association (RNACDA) as well as language professionals from Namibia.

These resources are designed to assist in teaching and learning of early literacy in Nama for both adults and children. The Nama varieties spoken in South Africa come from the Khoe language family and are endangered! The Nama varieties spoken in South Africa are not identical to those spoken in Namibia. With these resources we hope to encourage the use of Nama in the written and spoken form in South Africa and to help support the youth to learn more about their forefathers' heritage.

Teacher instructions provided in Afrikaans and English.

The development of these resources was funded by Palms for Life Fund and formally endorsed by the Pan South African Language Board (PanSALB).
